GCED Training Workshop for key Teacher Educators of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Cambodia

On 28-30 June, APCEIU held a Global Citizenship Education (GCED) training workshop for key teacher trainers of the National Institute of Education (NIE), one of Cambodia’s leading teacher education institutions.

This workshop was held for the first time since the GCED Cooperation Centre (GCC) was established as an affiliate of the National Institute of Education (NIE), which was achieved through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Institute of Education (NIE) of Cambodia and APCEIU in February this year. A total of 15 key teacher educators, including Mok Sarom, Deputy Director General of Education, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), Neau Vira, Deputy Director of National Institute of Education (NIE) and department heads and key professors, participated in the 3-day workshop, demonstrating their strong interest in GCED.      

On the first day, Mr Puth Samith, Secretary of State, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), attended the opening ceremony and emphasized the need to strengthen the implementation capacities of GCED in Cambodian teacher education. He also expressed expectations for the GCED Cooperation Centre (GCC) of Cambodia, which was established this year with the support of APCEIU. After the opening ceremony, Prof Jho Dae Hoon, Professor of Social Studies Education, Sungshin Women’s University, Korea, delivered his lecture on empowering teachers through GCED. Then, Mr Soth Nimol, Team Leader of UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, presented the linkage between SDGs and GCED in promoting and implementing a culture of peace. Lastly, Dr Chhinh Sitha, GCED Specialist in Cambodia, presented the issues and challenges of promoting GCED in schools and teacher education institutions in Cambodia.

On the second day, Ms Yangsook Lee, Deputy Head of the Institute of Global Citizenship Education (IGCED) at APCEIU, presented case studies on GCED promotion in the Asia-Pacific region and introduced teacher-learning resources available. Then Dr Min Joung Park, Researcher at IGCED, introduced the GCED Cooperation Centre initiative and shared experiences of the first cluster of GCCs, including the GCC at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Malaysia. Next, Dr Mok Sarom, Deputy Director General of Education, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), delivered a presentation on the current status of GCED implementation in Cambodia. In this session, three Cambodian teachers who attended the Asia Pacific Teacher Exchange (APTE) Programme shared their experiences with Korean schools.

On the third day, Prof. Jho Dae Hoon shared research methodology for analyzing the current status of GCED implementation in Cambodia and conducting baseline research. Then, participants were divided into groups to discuss ways to connect GCED within the existing NIE curriculum, and each group presented their action plans. At the closing ceremony, Mr Nath Bunroeun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), attended and promised the Ministry’s strong support for the GCC of Cambodia.

After this workshop, the National Institute of Education (NIE) will conduct baseline research on teachers' preparedness for GCED and develop curriculum reform plans and lecture modules to strengthen GCED in the undergraduate and graduate school curriculum.
